Do you have a teenager at home who loves to argue or is beginning to act defiant?
I believe that it is important for children to have a safe and supportive environment where they can communicate constructively. This is something that kids do not learn in school and yet it is the most essential skill they will need in life.
I have worked with children of all ages and their families for the past 19 years and through my work with them I have learned that teens are hungry for acknowledgment and for nonjudgmental listening. There are many important issues that they do not discuss with their peers, and they do not always have a comfortable enough relationship with a parent to ask tough questions or to express concern and anxiety.
Through individual sessions with teens I recognized that each has roller-coaster moods, galloping hormones, and conflicts with adults and peers. I have seen inspiring results in both well-adjusted teens and those at risk. In my experience “just talking” helps to lower stress levels, to normalize, “weird” thoughts, and to sort out personal conflict.
In addition to individual sessions with Teens, I also run a discussion and support group for teens. These discussion groups will help teens learn to anticipate problems and to find support for problem-solving. The groups will serve a clearly preventative function in improving both self-esteem and social ease. Participants feel better about “themselves” as they become comfortable with others and allow their “real selves” to show during group meetings. In addition I provide a support group for mothers with teens.
I know that together we can help our teens have a happy and healthy transition to adulthood.
